Diploma Foundations, Higher Diploma Foundations

Diploma Foundations: The Diploma Foundations Department (DFD) is a one-year bridging program which prepares students for their 2nd and 3rd year career programs at college. In this first year, students take four main academic courses in English, Math, Computing, and Personal and Professional Development all of which are delivered in a 25 hour matrix across two shifts, morning and afternoon/evening.

At Dubai Men's College we employ a mixture of positivist and constructivist approaches to instruction and learning strategy. Most courses are taught and assessed discretely with opportunities for students to apply skills in integrated projects, many of which involve off-campus visits. Lessons are conducted in "smart" wireless classrooms, computer labs, engineering workshops and independent learning centers.

The four main academic courses are English, Math, Computing, and Personal and Professional Development which are delivered in a 25 hour matrix in two shifts, morning and afternoon/evening. Instructional and learning strategies employ a mixture of positivist and constructivist approaches where most courses are taught and assessed discretely but where opportunities are provided to apply skills in integrated projects, many of which involve off-campus visits

One of DFD's strategic goals is to provide training for the development of students' personal skills including task organization, time management, and positive attitude towards work and team support. Part of this training takes the form of team-building activities which are incorporated into dedicated fitness/sports lessons.

Upon completing, students begin their career studies. Business Students may elect their Diploma Foundations year, to study Applied Business, Computer Information Processing or Financial Services and Banking. Engineering students have four programs choices in Mechatronics, Construction Technology, Environmental Health and Electrical Engineering.

Higher Diploma Foundations: During their first year at the college, students take courses in English, Math, Arabic, Computing, Research Skills & Projects, and Personal Development. These courses equip students with the required knowledge and skills that are essential to embark on career studies. Students then choose a program in: Business, Information Technology, Engineering, and Communication Technology.

English in the Foundations year focuses on the four main language skills - reading, listening, speaking, and writing - and encourages students to develop greater fluency and accuracy. Math covers the main numeracy areas that the target program specialization requires. Computing teaches keyboarding, file management, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, FrontPage, and Internet searching. Research Skills & Projects involves staff from the Learning Centre. Students learn how to locate knowledge found in books and on the Internet. The projects provide integrated learning opportunities where concepts from the core courses are recycled and practiced. Finally, Personal Development introduces students to the skills of time management, organization, and team work.

The mission of the Higher Diploma Foundations Department (HDFD) is to prepare students for their career studies, and to provide a bridging program to assist them in the transition from secondary school level to college level learning
