Traveling provides tremendous opportunities for fun, adventure and discovery. When we visit other countries, we gain a better understanding of the people who live there. We learn their cultures, history and background. We discover the similarities they have with us, as well as their differences.
The rationale behind the Global Local Club is our belief that it's very important to see the world and experience different cultures. It lets us open our minds to new things and we get to experience life in exciting different ways.
The Global Local Club is a student-teacher initiative that focuses on travel as a means of learning and self discovery. It is a club which is open to Dubai Men's College faculty, staff, students and alumni. The club will organize short term educational field trips to countries around the world. Members of the club will be expected to engage in a number of pre-travel activities which focus on research and learning about the history, geography and political system of the country. One of the goals of the club is to visit countries on five continents in the next five years.

Liberal Studies Film Club
Guy Brooksbank
Konrad Cedro ( 04- 4038 666 ) ( 050 144 7680 )
DMC-FilmClub@hct.ac.ae
Everybody has a story to tell. There are many ways to tell a story. It’s your turn now. Imagine. Get inspired. Re-imagine. Go beyond. Beyond boundaries. Beyond horizons. Explore. Tell a story…
A new club, the Liberal Studies Film Appreciation Club, was formed last year for students and faculty, offering the medium of film as a means of education and entertainment. Each week, films from around the world were screened in the TV Studio of the Applied Communications department. The club was the brainchild of Konrad Cedro who collaborated with Guy Brooksbank to offer this valuable medium to the college.
This past semester, films emphasizing the global community were chosen, and guest speakers shared their experience with the region the film was set in. For Buena Vista Social Club, Rory Allardice shared his pictures and experience of a recent trip to Cuba. Konrad Cedro did the same for Persepolis (Iran). Guy Brooksbank offered a brief history of Tibet gleaned from his time working with Tibetan refugees for the screening of Tibet-Cry of the Snow Lion. Kasia Waker-Iannelli, a former UN social worker in Afghanistan shared her experience there before the showing of Kandahar and Wendy Fox spoke about living in East Germany before the wall came down as a fitting preface to The Lives of Others. Mórag Jack and Nick Rea gave an insightful introduction to the screening of The Killing Fields (Kambodia).
This upcoming semester the Liberal Studies Film Appreciation Club plans to offer films that illustrate contemporary political theory through the medium of science fiction. While that might sound heady, it is really just an excuse to watch such sci-fi classics as Mad Max, Soylent Green, Blade Runner, Planet of the Apes and many others.
